Life is busy, and although it’s no excuse, the constant moving parts can make it easy to look up a year later realizing you haven’t used much time to give back. But what if there was a way to change all of that? The good news- you can! New Year, New You, New Strategy for giving back.
That being said, here are 5 ways to make the world a better place by doing things you already love.
Can a girl ever do enough shopping? I think not. So while you’re out and about with friends searching for the perfect LBD, don’t forget to be on the lookout for opportunities to donate at checkout. Whether you drop your spare change in a jar for foster children or use the credit card reader to donate $5 dollars to the children’s hospital, you’re making a difference that counts.
While you’re at it, purchase products from socially responsible brands that give back. Here are a few beauty brands to get you started:
Mac Viva La Glam Lipstick (100% of the profit from Viva Glam products toward helping those affected by HIV/AIDs)
Yes To (gives back to women and children in need on an international level)
Lush Charity Pot (100% of proceeds collected from the Charity Pot go to various grassroots organizations which make the communities around them a better place)
Givescent (supports female survivors of war through an organization known as Women for Women International. This organization provides direct aid, rights education, job skills training and small business development)
Thrive Causemetics (deliver products and services to women going through cancer treatment).
TOMS (provide shoes, sight, water, safe birth and bullying prevention services to people in need)
Love getting into a good book? If so, why not help children grow to share that passion by volunteering with an organization like United Way. I worked with my local United Way to read with elementary students. Let’s just say the impact it made on me was amazing! 30 minute sessions turned into opportunities to develop relationships with children who needed a little extra push. Rewarding is an understatement.
Volunteer to coach or assist with a youth sports team composed of at-risk youth. Deciding to help out with a team is a great way to double as a mentor or good influence on a child who might really need your help. You get to help reinforce positive fundamentals in a team environment and show others how to be the pro that you are in your favorite sport.
Not athletic? Say no more. You can also spend time doing fun things with kids outside of athletics by volunteering to mentor a child in need through organizations like The Boys & Girls Club.
You made a New Year resolution to get fit. Might as well stick to it for a cause. Lots of organizations are using 5ks and Marathons to raise money for great causes. Whether for breast cancer, alzheimers, or Leukemia, there’s a race for you. This list is a great starting point. Check it out here.
I live for a good party! And I’m pretty sure everyone else does too (don’t debate me on this). That being said, it’s always a great idea to host a kick back or sponsor a mixer ESPECIALLY if it’s for a good cause. In 2017, my law school hosted a mixer for hurricane victims, and I thought the idea was amazing. They used homecoming as an opportunity to get together for something bigger than themselves.
Know of a cause you’d like to support? Whether big or small, a shindig is a great way to make an impact. Just think, if you invite 20 friends to party for a cause, with donations of $30 each, you’ve already raised $600! Pretty cool, huh?!

Small things make a big difference. Let’s commit to making our mark little by little this year.
