An interesting thing happened as I sat on my yoga mat trying my hardest to channel my zen. It started as the instructor guided us through our next pose, calmly reminding us to focus on our breath.
Eyes closed with slow and steady breathes entering then drifting away, I heard her say, “Let it go.”
I pushed out all the negativity and frustration I felt in my soul with my next breath, careful to focus on releasing the pinned up emotions that were making my neck and back tight. In that moment, I was instantly amazed at how much better I felt by simply making the decision in that moment to let go.
So often we feel like we have no control over all the things going on in and around us. And if we aren’t careful we become puppets, dragged in whichever direction the world pulls us in. That one statement urging me to let go, coupled with one strong breath, reminded me that what we hold on to is a decision.
Ultimately, we control how we react to the things thrown at us. We choose what we keep and what we throw back. That choice isn’t always easy, but it’s ours to make.
When I imagine how free I could be by choosing to let go of things that weigh me down, it’s worth the intentional effort. So this year, I’m letting go more.
I encourage you to try taking a deep breath as you do the same.
