There’s only one thing that separates the winners from the losers. That factor is Stick-to-it-ness. I’d never heard this phrase before I spent a summer on Capitol Hill shaking hands with Senators and learning about the politics behind politics.
At the end of my stent, our Chief of Staff looked me square in the face and said, ” I know you’ll succeed at anything because you have stick-to-it-ness.”
ANYTHING? Anything is a pretty all encompassing word. So to say I could succeed at anything by maintaining the basic principle of stick-to-it-ness is saying A LOT. But a decade has passed since that internship, and I can’t think of one thing I haven’t succeeded at with the right level of stick-to-it-ness.
So what exactly is stick-to-it-ness?
Plainly put, stick-to-it-ness is the ability to keep going no matter what. It means to maintain consistency despite the odds. And I’d bet my last dollar that you can’t name one well-known celebrity that doesn’t possess this trait.
Look up any one of the greats and each of their stories will showcase the power of stick-to-it-ness at work.
Perhaps they weren’t the best when they started or perhaps they came from unfavorable circumstances which normally preclude others from succeeding. Regardless, they decided to beat the odds by sticking to their goals, and it paid off in a major way. We now know them as household names. We have conversations about ways they inspire us. We use them as examples of the American Dream.
But truthfully, the only difference between them and us is our ability to keep going.
Sure, there will be times when we fall flat on our face or can’t seem to get it right to save our lives. But that is all apart of the story. The valleys make the victories that much more meaningful.
Don’t get in your own way by convincing yourself that because it hasn’t happened quick that it won’t happen at all. The best things take time.
Stop worrying that you aren’t talented enough or that you aren’t seeing the same results as others around you. We all know there is nothing more common than gifted people who do nothing. Just because they are talented doesn’t mean they have the stick-to-it-ness to make it.
Hard work beats talent. You will always beat everyone you outwork.
Put in work today. Focus less on the quick come up and more on putting your head down and plowing away at your dreams. You’ve got everything you need to succeed so long as you stick to it.
